CLOS DES LANGRES MONOPOLE

Appellation Côte de Nuits Villages Plot Clos des langres Grape variety Chardonnay Area 3 ouvrées (0.32 acres)

History A property of the Langres Cathedral since the XIth century, the Clos des Langres has been long been known for the quality of its production. It was first listed as a premier line by Dr Lavalle in1855, in History and Statistics of the Vineyards and Great Wines in the Côte d’Or, “the wines have the body and the colour that (…), they can be compared with the premier cuvées of many renowned appellations.” It was also rated as a premier cuvee in 1892 by Mr Danguy and Mr Aubertin in The Great Wines of Burgundy.

The vineyard A selection of low production Chardonnays, top grafted on Pinot Noir planted in 1992. This parcel is planted with grass between rows to cause the vine roots to draw water and nutriments deep from the soil.

The soil/ subsoil Limestone of brown colour, on organo limestone of detrital origin from the Later Bathonian and Callovian era (known as “pearly flagstone”).

Exposure The Clos des Langres is located between Ladoix and Corgoloin, a geographic area which provides favourable drainage and a bright and ventilated microclimate. Vines spread on terraced rows from about 245m to 255m high on a gentle slope with south-east exposure. This plot is between the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, in the heart of the wine growing Burgundy.

Vinification The whole grape is pressed and left to settle cold for around 24 hours. The pressed juice is fermented in barrels (of which a third are new barrels). It is left to mature on the lees for a period of 10 to 12 months. Bottling will take place without fining, after filtration on plates.

The wine The Clos des Langres has an average yield of approximately 45hl/ha. The low production of Chardonnay selection allows great maturity. This along with the characteristics of the earth (brown calcareous soil, usually planted with Pinot Noir variety), gives the wines richness and fullness.
